Governor Ivey Proclaims Juneteenth An Alabama State Holiday

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced Friday, June 18, 2021 will be a state Holiday commemorating Juneteenth.

Governor Ivey issued a proclamation after the signing of abill by President Biden making Juneteenth a federal holiday. State offices will be closed with the exception of certain areas with essential personnel needed to maintain those areas. Those who have to work on June 18, 2021 should have a day off as soon as possible. 

Juneteenth falls on Saturday. Juneteenth is celebrated in recogntion of June 19, 1865 when slaves in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom
