A Legend and His Friendship with Congressman John Lewis

Article and Photos by: Erica Fox

He was born to sharecropper parents in Troy, Alabama. Social activism inspired him even as a young boy. He is a two-time HBCU graduate, Fisk University and American Baptist Theological Seminary (ABT). Even while in college he marched, protested, was arrested, beaten and still a great orator. Politics took him by storm. He rallied with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Viola Liuzzo, Amelia Boynton, President Barack Obama, just to name a few. The conscious of the U.S. Congress, Congressman-Rev. John Lewis, became quiet on Friday, July 17, 2020.

While a senior student at ABT, Congressman Lewis became friends with a freshman student, Reverend Dr. Julius R. Scruggs. Their friendship and fight for the end of racism, injustice and Christian causes was fought with the ethics of love.

Enjoy this special Community News From The Hill as host Erica Fox talks with Dr. Scruggs about his relationship with Congressman Lewis.
